Tynedale District Council - Profile Page
The District of Tynedale is situated in South West Northumberland in an outstandingly attractive rural area. Tynedale is the largest district in England and Wales covering an area of over 850 square miles with a population of 59,000. Tynedale Council is based in the ancient market town of Hexham, close to the World Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall, yet only 30 minutes from the region’s cultural, entertainment and commercial capital, Newcastle upon Tyne.
The district enjoys a spectacular environment which includes a major part of the Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Kielder Forest, Kielder Water and Hadrian's Wall. The diversity of the region and the location of Tynedale can offer an outstanding quality of life with opportunities to enjoy many varied interests.
Although Tynedale is a small district council with approximately 300 staff we have continually demonstrated a readiness to both innovate and adopt best practice. This has been proven in our ‘good’ rating in the Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) carried out by the Audit Commission, where we were only two points short of the ‘excellent’ category and were ranked in the top four performing councils in the Northern region.
In 2004 we were highly commended in the Local Government Chronicle’s ‘Most Improved Council of the Year’ award and were commended in the Municipal Journal ‘Best Achieving Council of the Year’ award. We have also won 2 Beacon Awards for supporting the rural economy and sustainable tourism. Tynedale is a high achieving council which takes pride in delivering high quality services to its community and it is an exciting and rewarding place to work.
